Who Can Apply for an Estonia Family or Friend Visit Visa?
Turkish citizens travelling to Estonia to spend a short period with relatives or friends can apply for a short-stay Schengen visa with a private visit as their stated purpose. This generally falls under the type C visa category. It does not provide permission to work, settle permanently or join family members for long-term residence.
Ordinary Turkish passport holders generally need a visa. Other Turkish passport categories may qualify for short-stay exemptions, so check the current rules for your passport before applying. The general Schengen limit is 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, including time already spent in other Schengen countries.
Application Requirements
Estonia should be your sole or main destination. For a multi-country trip, the competent country is determined by the purpose and duration of the stays. If no main destination can be established, the country of first entry may be responsible. Appointment availability alone is not a valid reason to apply through Estonia.
Your documents should explain whom you are visiting, your relationship and where you will stay. An invitation should identify the host, provide their address and contact details, describe the visit dates and explain any financial support. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need the host's identity or lawful residence document and evidence of family ties.
Your passport should generally have been issued within the previous 10 years, remain valid for at least three months after your intended departure from the Schengen area and contain sufficient blank pages. Travel medical insurance must cover the entire visit throughout the Schengen area, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. Evidence of finances and ties to Türkiye remains important even when a host offers accommodation.
Application Steps
- Define your itinerary: Confirm dates, the host's address and any stays elsewhere in the Schengen area. Check your remaining short-stay allowance.
- Verify the application route: Consult current instructions from the Estonian mission responsible for applications in Türkiye. Check the submission location and document checklist.
- Prepare the file: Complete the form consistently with your passport and itinerary. Collect invitation, financial, employment or study documents.
- Attend your appointment: Submit the requested originals and copies, pay applicable charges and provide biometric data when required.
- Check the outcome: After receiving your passport, review the visa dates, number of entries and permitted stay. Report any errors before travelling.
Use genuine documents and describe provisional arrangements accurately. Buying non-refundable tickets before a decision involves financial risk. Translation, certification and document-age requirements should be checked against the current official checklist rather than assumed to apply uniformly.
Appointments and Biometrics
Appointment availability can fluctuate, particularly during busy travel periods. Waiting for an appointment is separate from visa processing time. Applications can generally be lodged up to six months before the intended journey. Allow additional time for public holidays, passport delivery and possible requests for further evidence.
A photograph and, where required, fingerprints are collected for Schengen applications. Fingerprints recorded within the previous 59 months may be reusable, but fresh fingerprints or personal attendance can still be requested. Children under 12 are generally exempt from fingerprint collection. Applications for minors may require additional custody documents and consent from a parent who is not travelling.
Processing Time
A complete, admissible application is normally decided in approximately 15 calendar days. Where further examination or supporting evidence is necessary, processing may extend to approximately 45 calendar days. These are not promised completion dates, and appointment waiting times and passport transport should be allowed for separately.
Keep your host informed and available if clarification is requested. Urgent family circumstances can be documented and brought to the authority's attention, but urgency does not automatically result in priority handling or approval.
Reasons an Application May Be Refused
Common concerns include an unclear visit purpose, insufficient or unexplained funds, inconsistent accommodation details, inadequate insurance or doubts about departure before the authorised stay ends. Recent large deposits may need an explanation supported by evidence. Previous overstays and misleading documents can also affect the assessment.
A refusal notice explains the grounds and applicable appeal procedure and deadline. Before applying again, address those grounds with relevant evidence. A visa does not provide an unconditional right of entry: carry copies of your invitation, accommodation arrangements, return plans and financial evidence for possible border checks.
