Who Needs a Transit Visa for Greece?
For Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye, transit requirements depend on whether the journey stays entirely within an airport's international transit area or involves entering Greece. An itinerary described as a connection does not automatically qualify as airside transit. Baggage collection, terminal access and every onward flight must be checked before deciding whether a visa is necessary.
Turkish citizens are generally not required to hold a Greek Type A airport transit visa solely because of their nationality. Current rules, travel document restrictions and individual circumstances should nevertheless be confirmed through official sources before departure. Where required, a Type A visa permits a connection within the international transit area only. It does not authorize entry into Greece.
Collecting checked baggage, using a landside hotel, changing airports or travelling across Greece by road involves entry requirements. Turkish ordinary passport holders generally need a valid Type C Schengen visa with sufficient entries for such journeys, unless another applicable exemption covers them. Short-stay exemptions for special, service and diplomatic passports must be checked against the document and itinerary.
Application Requirements
First establish whether the itinerary is genuinely airside or requires admission to the Schengen Area. A flight from Athens to another Schengen airport is an internal Schengen connection, even if the final destination is outside the area. Border checks normally take place at the first Schengen airport, so an airport transit visa alone would not cover that journey.
If an application is necessary, the passport must meet the relevant validity, issue-date and blank-page requirements. For a Type C application, it should generally have been issued within the previous ten years and remain valid for at least three months after the intended Schengen departure. Any visa or residence permit needed for the final destination must also cover the trip.
- Document the onward journey and any return connection.
- Check remaining entries and permitted stay on existing visas.
- Explain how travel expenses will be funded.
- For Type C applications, obtain insurance meeting the applicable Schengen requirements.
Application Steps
Ask the operating airline whether baggage will be checked through and whether the next departure gate can be reached without border control. Separate tickets, different airlines and overnight connections deserve particular attention. Confirm that the international transit area remains accessible during the connection and that the terminals have suitable airside links.
- Review the itinerary, passport category and existing travel permissions.
- Confirm which country and application channel are competent to accept the application.
- Complete the correct form and gather documents matching your circumstances.
- Attend the appointment, provide biometrics if required and pay applicable charges.
- Track the application and check the visa details when the passport is returned.
For Type C applications, the first landing point does not by itself determine the responsible country. The main destination, purpose of travel and length of stay also matter. Pure transit itineraries and routes involving several countries should be clarified with the relevant authority before filing. Purchasing a non-refundable ticket does not provide a visa advantage.
Appointments and Biometrics
Use the official application channel designated by the Greek consular authority responsible for your place of residence in Türkiye. Appointment availability can vary during holiday periods and busy travel seasons. Waiting for an appointment is separate from processing time, so both stages should be included in travel planning.
Fingerprints and a photograph may be required. Fingerprints collected for an earlier Schengen application can generally be reused within a 59-month period, but fresh collection or personal attendance may still be requested. Children under twelve are exempt from fingerprint collection; they still need their own applications and the applicable parental documentation.
Processing Time
A properly lodged, admissible Schengen visa application is generally decided in approximately 15 calendar days. Additional checks or document requests can extend processing to approximately 45 calendar days. Appointment delays, preparation and passport delivery should be allowed for separately. An approaching flight date does not guarantee priority treatment.
Reasons for Refusal
Common concerns include an unclear connection, insufficient evidence of admission to the final destination, inconsistent bookings or inadequate financial documentation. The wrong visa category, unsuitable insurance and documents whose reliability cannot be established may also cause problems. Previous visa-use violations can affect the assessment. If refused, consult the official notice for the reasons and available review procedures before deciding whether to challenge the decision or prepare a new application.
