Greece Family or Friend Visit Visa

Who Can Apply for a Greece Family or Friend Visit Visa?

Turkish citizens visiting relatives or friends in Greece for a short stay can apply for a Type C Schengen visa under the private visit category. Typical purposes include family gatherings, special occasions and staying with friends. This category does not cover employment, long-term residence or family reunification. The host should be legally present in Greece, and the application should clearly document the relationship and visit arrangements.

Ordinary Turkish passport holders generally need a visa. Holders of special, service or diplomatic passports may qualify for short-stay exemptions and should check current conditions. Short visits across the Schengen area generally cannot exceed 90 days in any rolling 180-day period.

Application Requirements

Greece should be your only or main destination. For trips involving several Schengen countries, the main destination is determined by the length and purpose of the stay. If no main destination can be established, the country of first entry may be responsible. Where you apply in Türkiye also depends on your residential address and the relevant consular jurisdiction.

Your passport should have been issued within the previous ten years, remain valid for at least three months after your intended Schengen departure and contain sufficient blank visa pages. The application form, invitation, accommodation details and travel arrangements should be consistent. Travel medical insurance should cover the entire visit throughout the Schengen area, generally with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000.

You must explain how the trip will be funded and provide evidence supporting your intention to return to Türkiye. Employment, studies, regular income and family commitments may be relevant. If your host pays your expenses, a sponsorship statement and financial evidence may be requested. Certain family members of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens may qualify for special procedures where the relevant conditions apply.

Invitation and Accommodation Evidence

The invitation should identify the host, their address and contact details, your relationship, the proposed dates and who will cover costs. Supporting documents normally include the host's identification and, where applicable, residence permit. Check the relevant mission's current checklist for signature authentication, official certification or electronic invitation requirements. An invitation does not replace evidence of funding or reasons to return.

Application Steps

  1. Define your itinerary: Confirm the visit dates, host address and any additional destinations.
  2. Check jurisdiction: Identify the Greek mission and authorised application centre serving your place of residence.
  3. Prepare your file: Complete the form and gather the invitation, financial records and occupation-specific documents.
  4. Attend your appointment: Submit the file, complete any required biometrics and pay applicable charges.
  5. Follow the application: Respond to additional requests and check the visa details when your passport is returned.

Compare names, passport details and dates across the file before submission. Non-refundable bookings carry a financial risk while a decision is pending. Follow the mission's instructions on acceptable transport reservations rather than assuming paid tickets are required.

Appointments and Biometrics

Appointment availability varies by location, season and public holidays. An application centre handles administrative tasks; the relevant Greek authorities decide whether to issue a visa. Personal attendance, fingerprint collection or an interview may be required.

Fingerprints collected for a Schengen application within the previous 59 months may sometimes be reused, but fresh biometrics can still be requested. Children under 12 are generally exempt from fingerprinting. They still need their own applications and the required parental documentation.

Processing Time

An admissible application is normally assessed in approximately 15 calendar days. Cases requiring additional scrutiny or documents may take up to 45 calendar days. Appointment waiting times, passport transfers and delivery are separate, so allow a practical buffer before departure.

Short-stay applications can generally be submitted up to six months before travel. Although submission at least 15 calendar days before departure is the general rule, this may leave insufficient time for appointment delays or extended checks. Confirm current arrangements with the responsible mission.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Possible grounds include an unclear visit purpose, inconsistent invitation details, insufficient financial evidence or doubts about departure before the authorised stay ends. Inadequate insurance, unreliable documents and previous overstays may also affect the assessment. Having a host does not by itself establish eligibility.

If refused, review the written reasons and the appeal instructions, deadlines and competent authority listed in the notice. Before reapplying, address the underlying issues and document any relevant changes rather than simply resubmitting the same file.
