Who Is the U.S. C1/D Crew Visa For?
The C1/D visa is commonly used by crew members working on commercial vessels or international airlines whose duties involve travel to the United States. For Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye, eligible roles may include pilots, flight attendants, ship captains, engineers, deckhands and other personnel providing services essential to a vessel’s normal operation. Eligibility depends on the actual assignment, not simply a maritime or aviation job title.
The C1 component covers transit through the United States, while the D component covers qualifying crew activity. Someone flying to a U.S. port as a passenger to join a ship may need both authorizations. A consular officer may issue a combined C1/D visa when appropriate. Private yacht employees, certain repair workers and other specialized maritime personnel may require a different category.
Application Requirements
You should be able to explain your crew role and show how the proposed trip relates to it. An employment contract, employer letter, assignment schedule and joining instructions can help establish this connection. Applicants without a confirmed assignment may need further evidence of their professional circumstances and intended employment. An intention to look for work is not a substitute for a credible crew travel purpose.
- Hold a valid passport and complete the DS-160 accurately.
- Provide a consistent explanation of your assignment, arrival arrangements and departure.
- Identify who will cover travel and related expenses.
- Disclose previous U.S. travel, visa refusals and any immigration violations truthfully.
Under ordinary D crew rules, departure is generally required within 29 days. C1 transit permission also does not allow an extended stay. A visa’s validity is separate from the period of admission granted on arrival. U.S. border officials decide whether to admit a traveler and on what terms. This visa does not provide unrestricted permission to work ashore or remain in the country between unrelated assignments.
Application Steps
- Check the category: Confirm your duties, travel route and where you will join the vessel or airline crew.
- Complete the DS-160: Enter accurate passport, employment and travel details, and save the barcode confirmation page.
- Set up your appointment account: Follow the payment and passport delivery instructions through the official service linked by U.S. missions in Türkiye.
- Prepare supporting evidence: Check that your employment documents and joining instructions agree, adding translations where requested.
- Attend and follow up: Complete the interview and applicable biometric procedures, then monitor your case and passport delivery.
If assignment details remain provisional, do not present them as confirmed. Check the official instructions for updating information. Assistance from an employer or crewing agency does not remove your responsibility for the statements submitted in your application. Avoid relying on an expected visa outcome when purchasing nonrefundable tickets.
Appointments and Biometrics
Check the current official appointment system for the appropriate application location and available dates in Türkiye. Capacity can change. Interview questions may cover your employer, daily duties, professional experience and plans to leave the United States. Fingerprints and photographs are collected or verified according to the applicable procedure, with exceptions depending on factors such as age and previous records.
A previous U.S. visa does not automatically qualify you for an interview waiver. Current eligibility rules apply, and an interview may still be requested. Urgent joining instructions also do not automatically secure an earlier appointment. Where expedited requests are available, they require supporting evidence and remain subject to the appointment service’s criteria.
Processing Time
Allow for three separate stages: waiting for an appointment, post-interview processing and passport return. Any estimated timeframe should account for all three. Seasonal demand, missing documents or administrative processing may cause delays. A favorable indication during the interview does not mean that your passport will be ready immediately. Keep your employer informed if your joining date is approaching, and check current official estimates before making firm arrangements.
Reasons an Application May Be Refused
Possible grounds include duties that do not fit the category, an insufficiently established travel purpose, inconsistent evidence or failure to meet temporary-stay requirements. Previous visa or admission violations may also affect eligibility. A refusal under section 221(g) can involve missing documents or administrative processing and may include instructions for further action; it does not necessarily mean that no further consideration is possible.
Read any refusal notice carefully before deciding what to do next. Reapplying does not automatically change the decision. Relevant changes in circumstances or previously missing explanations should be supported with accurate evidence. False statements and fraudulent documents can have serious consequences for future travel.
