Who Is the Malta Tourist Visa For?

A Malta tourist visa is a short-stay Schengen Type C visa for Turkish citizens travelling for holidays, sightseeing or cultural visits. It covers stays of up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area. Your visa sticker determines the actual permitted stay, validity period and number of entries. A tourist visa does not authorise employment or long-term residence.

Turkish ordinary passport holders generally need a visa. Special, service and diplomatic passport holders may benefit from short-stay exemptions, subject to current entry rules. Travellers who already hold a valid Schengen visa should check its territorial validity, available entries and remaining days before planning their trip.

Application Requirements

Malta should be your only destination or the main destination of your trip. For a holiday covering several Schengen countries, this will normally be the country where you spend the most time. If stays are equal and no other main destination can be identified, the country of first entry generally determines where you apply. Your application must reflect your actual itinerary.

Your passport should have been issued within the previous 10 years, remain valid for at least three months after your intended departure from the Schengen area and contain sufficient blank pages. You must explain your accommodation arrangements, access to funds and reasons for returning to Türkiye. Employment, studies, family circumstances and financial records are considered together.

Travel medical insurance must cover all Schengen countries throughout your planned stay. The standard minimum cover is EUR 30,000, including emergency medical treatment, hospital care and repatriation for medical reasons. If someone else funds your holiday, provide evidence of the sponsor's finances and relationship to you.

Application Steps

  1. Plan your itinerary: Establish travel dates, accommodation and any visits to other Schengen countries.
  2. Check the current requirements: Consult the authorised application channel serving applicants in Türkiye.
  3. Prepare your file: Complete the form and gather consistent financial, employment and travel documents.
  4. Attend your appointment: Submit your documents, pay the applicable charges and complete any required biometric procedures.
  5. Monitor your application: Respond to further requests and check the visa details when your passport is returned.

Names, passport numbers and travel dates should match across your documents. Employees, business owners, students and pensioners need different evidence of their circumstances. Follow the current checklist for originals, copies and translations rather than assuming the same rules apply to every applicant.

Appointments and Biometrics

Applications are normally submitted by appointment through the authorised channel announced for Türkiye. Availability varies by location and season. The application centre handles document intake and administrative tasks; the competent Maltese authorities decide whether to issue a visa. Prepare your passport and supporting documents in the requested order before attending.

Biometric procedures include fingerprints and a photograph meeting the required standards. Fingerprints recorded for an earlier Schengen application within approximately the previous 59 months may be reusable, but fresh fingerprints or personal attendance can still be requested. Children under 12 are generally exempt from fingerprint collection. Applications for minors also require attention to parental consent and custody arrangements.

Processing Times

A complete, admissible application is normally assessed in around 15 calendar days. Further checks or requests for documents can extend processing to approximately 45 calendar days. Appointment waiting times, document transfer and passport delivery may add to the overall timeline. Public holidays and peak travel periods can also affect planning.

Applications can generally be lodged up to six months before departure and should normally be submitted at least around 15 calendar days before travel. This minimum interval does not ensure a decision before your flight. Allow additional time where possible, and consider the financial risk of non-refundable bookings before a decision is issued.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Possible grounds include insufficient funds, unexplained account activity, an unclear travel purpose, unreliable accommodation details or inadequate evidence of an intention to return to Türkiye. Inconsistent documents, false statements, previous overstays and unsuitable insurance may also affect the decision. Providing every listed document does not automatically lead to approval.

If refused, review the reasons and follow the appeal instructions and deadlines stated in the decision notice. A fresh application should address the underlying issues. An issued visa does not provide unconditional entry; border officials may ask to see supporting travel documents.
