Who Is a Malta Business Visa For?
A Malta business visa is a short-stay Schengen visa for Turkish citizens travelling for meetings, trade fairs, conferences, negotiations or other business visits. It generally falls under category C and permits visits within the Schengen limit of 90 days in any 180-day period. The actual stay allowed also depends on the visa sticker and time already spent in the Schengen area.
Applicants may be company owners, employees or self-employed professionals who can demonstrate a genuine business purpose. This visa does not authorise employment in Malta. Providing services, performing on-site duties or undertaking an extended assignment may require a different permission, even when the traveller remains employed by a Turkish company.
Application Requirements
Turkish ordinary passport holders generally need a visa unless they hold an applicable exemption or an existing Schengen visa covering the journey. Other Turkish passport categories may benefit from short-stay exemptions; current rules should be checked against official guidance. Malta must be the appropriate country to process the application, usually because it is the main destination. For multi-country trips, the length and purpose of each stay matter. The first-entry country becomes relevant when no main destination can be established.
Your passport should have been issued within the previous ten years, remain valid for at least three months after your intended departure from Schengen, and contain sufficient blank visa pages. The application should explain the visit, funding arrangements and reasons for returning to Türkiye. Dates and details across the invitation, employer letter and travel reservations should agree.
The Maltese host's invitation should identify the visitor, describe the planned meetings, provide dates and contact details, and specify any costs the host will cover. An invitation does not replace evidence of finances or accommodation. Travel medical insurance must cover all Schengen countries and provide at least EUR 30,000 in required medical coverage. Follow the current checklist for document languages, translations and how recently supporting records must have been issued.
Application Steps
- Confirm that your activities qualify as a short business visit and that Malta is the appropriate destination for filing.
- Check official guidance for the authorised submission channel and application location in Türkiye.
- Complete the form and assemble consistent business, financial and travel evidence.
- Book an appointment, submit the file, pay applicable charges and provide biometrics if required.
- Track the application and respond to requests for additional documents or an interview.
- After collection, check the visa's validity dates, number of entries and permitted stay.
Before submission, compare the invitation with the employer letter, particularly the proposed activities and who will pay. Company-funded trips should be supported by a clear undertaking and relevant financial records. A large bank balance alone may not explain affordability: regular income and traceable account activity are also relevant.
Appointments and Biometrics
Applications are generally lodged through an authorised visa application centre, while the competent Maltese authorities assess the file and make the decision. Appointment availability varies by location and season. Bring the passport, completed form, suitable photograph and the originals or copies specified in the current checklist.
Fingerprints are normally required. A usable Schengen biometric record collected within the previous 59 months may be reused in certain circumstances, but fresh fingerprints or personal attendance can still be requested. Children under twelve are exempt from fingerprint collection. Having previously supplied biometrics does not automatically remove the appointment requirement.
Processing Time
A properly lodged short-stay application is generally assessed in approximately 15 calendar days. Where further examination or additional evidence is needed, processing may extend to approximately 45 calendar days. Appointment queues and passport return arrangements are separate from the assessment period. Current workloads and public holidays can affect the overall schedule.
Applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel and should normally be submitted at least 15 calendar days before departure. Preparing earlier is advisable rather than relying on that minimum window. Non-refundable bookings made before a decision carry financial risk; any reservations submitted should be genuine and consistent with the itinerary.
Reasons an Application May Be Refused
Possible concerns include an unclear business purpose, an unverifiable invitation, insufficient financial evidence, inconsistent information or doubts about departure at the end of the visit. Previous visa breaches or false statements may also affect the assessment. A complete checklist does not, by itself, establish eligibility.
If refused, read the decision carefully for the reasons and any appeal instructions. The decision notice should guide the applicable procedure and deadline. A new application should address the earlier concerns with relevant evidence rather than simply resubmitting the same file.
