Who Needs a Malta Transit Visa?
For Turkish citizens travelling from Türkiye through Malta, the key question is whether the connection stays entirely within the international transit area. An airport transit visa, known as a Type A visa, permits an airside connection only. It does not authorise entry into Malta or travel within the Schengen Area. Turkish passport holders are generally not required to obtain a Malta airport transit visa solely because of their nationality, but current requirements and individual circumstances should always be checked.
An airside connection is different from entering Malta to catch another flight. Collecting checked baggage, completing check-in beyond border control or staying at a hotel outside the airport may require entry permission. In these situations, a Type A visa is insufficient. The relevant question is whether your passport, existing visa or residence permit allows a short Schengen stay.
Application Requirements
Start by confirming that your connection can actually be completed without crossing the Schengen border. A single booking reference does not establish this on its own. Ask the airline whether baggage will be checked through, where the onward boarding pass is issued and whether the connection requires immigration clearance. Separate tickets deserve particular attention because baggage collection and fresh check-in may be necessary.
A flight from Malta to another Schengen country normally requires Schengen entry in Malta. A journey continuing to Italy, for example, is not simply an international airside transfer. Turkish special, service and diplomatic passport holders should check the exemptions applicable to their documents rather than assume that ordinary passport rules apply.
- Your passport must meet the applicable validity, issue-date and blank-page requirements.
- You must hold any visa or entry permission required for your final destination.
- The flight sequence and connection times must support the stated travel purpose.
- Any existing Schengen visa must have suitable validity, available entries and sufficient remaining authorised stay.
Application Steps
Establish the correct category before collecting an application file. If the airport arrangements do not allow an airside transfer, exemption from an airport transit visa does not solve the entry requirement. Applicants in Türkiye should follow the current instructions issued by Malta’s competent representation and its authorised application channel.
- Review every flight segment, baggage arrangement and potential border crossing.
- Confirm whether your passport and existing permissions cover the itinerary.
- Complete the relevant application form and prepare supporting documents.
- Book an appointment, submit the file and provide biometrics if required.
- Track the application and check the visa details after a decision.
If no visa application is needed, keep your onward booking and destination entry documents available when travelling. Airline boarding checks and border admission decisions are separate assessments.
Appointments and Biometrics
Where a visa is required, appointments should be arranged through the channel authorised to accept Malta applications in Türkiye. Availability can vary by location and season. An application centre receives documents and handles administrative tasks; the competent Maltese authorities decide the application.
Fingerprint requirements depend on age and previous biometric records. Suitable fingerprints recorded in VIS within roughly the preceding 59 months may be reused, although fresh fingerprints or personal attendance can still be requested. Children under 12 are generally exempt from fingerprint collection, but still need the relevant application documents and parental or legal representative permissions.
Processing Time
A decision on an admissible Schengen visa application normally takes approximately 15 calendar days. Cases requiring additional scrutiny or documents may take up to approximately 45 calendar days. Appointment waiting times, document preparation and passport return should be allowed for separately.
Applications can generally be lodged up to approximately six months before the planned journey. Applying close to departure increases the risk that your passport will not be returned in time. Check current visa and service charges before submission, as category, age and exemptions may affect the amount. Non-refundable bookings made before a decision carry a financial risk.
Reasons an Application May Be Refused
Possible grounds include an inadequately explained transit purpose, missing evidence of destination entry permission, conflicting flight details or documents whose reliability cannot be established. Unclear funding arrangements and failure to satisfy applicable entry conditions can also affect the assessment. Selecting the wrong visa category may require corrections or a separate application.
If refused, review the official notice for the reasons and available remedies. A fresh application should address the identified issues rather than repeat the same unsupported information. Any appeal must follow the instructions and deadlines stated in the decision.

The amount payable depends on the required visa category, the applicant’s age and any applicable exemptions.
