Who Can Apply for a Finland Family or Friend Visit Visa?

A Finland family or friend visit visa is a short-stay Schengen visa for Turkish citizens visiting relatives or friends in Finland. Ordinary Turkish passport holders generally need a visa before travelling. Holders of special, service or diplomatic passports should check whether their passport and intended visit qualify for a short-stay exemption.

This category covers visits within the Schengen limit of 90 days in any 180-day period. It is not a route to settling with family, taking employment or undertaking long-term studies. Your host does not necessarily need to be a Finnish citizen, but should provide evidence of their lawful residence in Finland.

Application Requirements

Finland must be your only or main destination. For trips covering several Schengen countries, responsibility depends on the purpose and duration of your stays. If no main destination can be identified, the country of first entry may be responsible. An available appointment alone does not justify applying through Finland.

Your passport should have been issued within the previous ten years, remain valid for at least three months after your planned departure from Schengen, and contain sufficient blank pages. The application must explain your visit, accommodation, funding and intention to return to Türkiye. Previous visas do not determine the outcome of a new application.

The invitation should identify both visitor and host, explain their relationship, and state the proposed dates, accommodation address and any financial support. Family records can establish kinship; a brief explanation with proportionate supporting evidence can help establish a friendship. Avoid submitting excessive private correspondence when simpler evidence explains the relationship.

Financial evidence should show accessible funds and a credible source of income, not just a closing balance. Host sponsorship does not remove the need to explain your personal circumstances in Türkiye. Travel medical insurance must cover all Schengen countries, with at least EUR 30,000 for the required emergency medical treatment and medical repatriation expenses.

Application Steps

  1. Confirm the visit dates, purpose and whether Finland is responsible for your application.
  2. Review Finland’s current instructions for applicants in Türkiye and the document checklist for private visits.
  3. Complete the form and gather your invitation, financial evidence, travel arrangements and supporting documents.
  4. Book through the authorised application channel, submit your file and provide biometrics where required.
  5. Monitor progress, respond to document requests and check the visa details when your passport returns.

Names, dates and addresses should be consistent throughout the file. Supporting evidence varies for employees, business owners, students, pensioners and sponsored applicants. Where reservations are requested, follow the current instructions and consider refundable arrangements rather than committing to non-refundable travel before a decision.

Appointments and Biometrics

Applicants in Türkiye should use the appointment system indicated by Finland’s official guidance. The application centre accepts documents and biometrics; the competent Finnish authority decides the application. Availability varies by location and season, so allow time for obtaining an appointment as well as processing.

Fingerprints are normally collected, alongside a photograph meeting the required standards. Schengen fingerprints recorded within the previous 59 months may sometimes be reused, although fresh fingerprints or personal attendance can still be requested. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting. Minors may need parental documents and consent depending on their travel arrangements.

Processing Time

A complete, admissible application is generally assessed in approximately 15 calendar days. Further checks or additional document requests can extend processing to around 45 calendar days. Appointment waiting times and passport return are separate, while public holidays and seasonal demand can affect the overall schedule.

Applications can generally be lodged up to six months before departure. Applying shortly before travel does not mean a decision will arrive in time, even with an invitation or booked transport. Check current official guidance before planning your submission.

Reasons for Refusal

Possible grounds include an unclear purpose, conflicting invitation and itinerary details, unexplained funds, inadequate insurance or doubts about departure before the permitted stay ends. False information can harm the application. If refused, review the notice for reasons, available review procedures and deadlines before deciding whether to challenge the decision or submit a corrected application.
