Who Needs a Denmark Transit Visa?
For Turkish citizens travelling from Türkiye, the key distinction is whether a connection in Denmark requires entry into the Schengen area. An airport transit visa, known as a type A visa, covers a stay within an airport's international transit zone. It does not allow entry into Denmark, a city visit or an onward flight operating within the Schengen area.
Turkish nationals generally do not need an airport transit visa for a connection in Denmark if they remain in the international transit area. However, this does not make every itinerary visa-free. Passport type, baggage arrangements, terminal access and onward flights must be checked. Ordinary Turkish passport holders who need to cross the Schengen border will usually require a valid type C visa unless another applicable entry entitlement exists.
Application Requirements
Start by establishing whether an airside connection is possible. Collecting checked baggage, checking in again landside or staying at a hotel outside the transit zone may require border clearance. Separate tickets do not automatically create a visa requirement, but they can make these procedures necessary. Ask the airline whether baggage can be checked through and whether the next boarding pass can be issued airside.
On an Istanbul–Copenhagen–Paris itinerary, Schengen entry takes place in Copenhagen. This is not an airport-only transit arrangement. Nevertheless, the country responsible for a visa application is determined by the main destination and travel arrangements, not automatically by the first airport of entry. Check any existing visa's validity, permitted entries and remaining authorised stay before relying on it.
If a type A visa is required because of particular circumstances, evidence of onward travel and permission to enter the final destination will be important. A type C application also involves checks on passport validity, travel medical insurance, funding and the purpose of travel. Holders of special or service passports should verify the applicable exemptions; visa exemption does not remove other entry conditions.
Application Steps
- Map the journey: List every connection, terminal change and baggage collection point.
- Confirm the visa position: Distinguish airside transit from Schengen entry and check existing visas or residence documents.
- Identify the correct authority: Follow the Danish authorities' current instructions for applications submitted in Türkiye, where Denmark is responsible.
- Prepare the file: Complete the appropriate form and collect consistent travel and supporting documents.
- Submit and monitor: Complete any required payment, attend the appointment and respond to further document requests.
If no visa is needed, focus on confirming that the connection can actually be completed airside. Airline boarding checks and border decisions are separate stages. Keep booking details and baggage information accessible during travel. Purchasing non-refundable tickets before the visa position is clear can create avoidable financial risk.
Appointments and Biometrics
Where an application is necessary, follow the current appointment procedure at the authorised application centre in Türkiye. Completing an online form or making a payment does not necessarily replace an in-person submission. A photograph and fingerprints may be required. Previously recorded Schengen fingerprints can generally be reused for approximately 59 months where the relevant conditions are met, although fresh fingerprints may still be requested.
Children under 12 are generally exempt from fingerprint collection, but photographs and other documents remain necessary. Parental consent or custody evidence may also be requested. Check the current rules on personal attendance and exemptions before arranging the appointment.
Processing Time
The usual Schengen visa assessment period is approximately 15 calendar days after an admissible application has been lodged. Cases requiring additional examination may take up to around 45 days. Appointment availability, document preparation and passport return are separate considerations. A short connection or an approaching departure date does not establish a right to accelerated processing.
Applications can generally be lodged up to approximately six months before travel. Current consular instructions should guide scheduling. Allow extra time during busy periods and answer requests for further evidence promptly, without assuming that this will secure a particular decision date.
Reasons an Application May Be Refused
Problems may include choosing the wrong category, unexplained flight connections, missing proof of entry permission for the final destination or inconsistent documents. For type C applications, insufficient funds, unsuitable insurance or unresolved doubts about the travel purpose can also affect the decision. False documents can have serious consequences. Following a refusal, review the written reasons and the stated appeal procedure before deciding whether to challenge the decision or submit a corrected application.

Ücret Bilgisi
No visa fee is payable for an airside connection that does not require a visa. Where an application is necessary, check the current consular fee for the relevant category, age group and any applicable exemption. Application centre charges, optional services and exchange rates may affect the total cost; the visa fee is generally not refunded following a refusal.
Application Process
6 steps- 1Step 1
Check the connection arrangements
Confirm whether flights are within or outside Schengen, and ask the airline about terminal access, baggage handling and airside transfer options.
- 2Step 2
Establish whether a visa is needed
Turkish citizens generally do not need a type A visa for an entirely airside connection. If border clearance is necessary, check the rules for your passport and any existing entry entitlement.
- 3Step 3
Identify the responsible country and channel
For travel involving Schengen entry, determine the main destination. If Denmark is responsible, follow its current application instructions for Türkiye.
- 4Step 4
Prepare the form and evidence
Use the checklist for the correct category and ensure that flight details, destination entry permission and financial evidence are consistent.
- 5Step 5
Attend the submission appointment
Pay the applicable charges following current instructions, submit the documents and provide biometrics if required.
- 6Step 6
Review the decision and final itinerary
Monitor requests for additional evidence. If a visa is issued, check its category, dates and entries, then reconfirm the connection arrangements before departure.
