Who Should Apply for a Denmark Student Visa?
Turkish citizens planning to study in Denmark must choose an application route that matches their course and length of stay. For longer programmes, the relevant application is generally a residence permit for study, even though it is commonly called a student visa. A short course may instead qualify for a short-stay Schengen visa. These routes have different requirements and do not provide identical rights.
For applicants submitting from Türkiye, the first step is to check the status of the institution and programme. Educational visits of no more than 90 days within any 180-day period must be distinguished from longer study stays. A short-stay visa does not replace the residence permission required for a full degree programme. Course length alone does not determine eligibility.
Application Requirements
Applicants normally need admission to an eligible Danish educational institution. The admission letter should identify the programme, its level, study format and expected dates. If admission is conditional, ask the institution whether outstanding language requirements, tuition payments or other conditions must be satisfied before the application can proceed.
You must also meet the financial requirements applicable to your category. Check the current official maintenance amount and accepted evidence before preparing bank documents. A relative’s promise to cover expenses may not, by itself, satisfy the rules. Financial records should clearly identify the account holder, available funds and, where required, the source of the money.
- Your passport must have sufficient validity for the permission requested.
- You must meet the programme’s academic and language requirements.
- Where applicable, provide evidence of tuition payment, a scholarship or exemption.
- Prepare accommodation and health coverage information according to the selected route.
Requirements differ between higher education, secondary education and other courses. Programmes without state approval may carry different conditions, particularly regarding work and accompanying family members. Admission should therefore not be treated as confirmation that every benefit associated with student residence will apply. Additional documents may be needed because of the applicant’s age or educational background.
Application Steps
Start by confirming whether you need a short-stay visa or a study residence permit. For longer higher education programmes, follow the current instructions from the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI). Create a case order ID and pay the official fee where required. Short-stay applicants must follow the separate Schengen procedure.
- Check your admission letter and the programme’s eligibility.
- Review the current application form, supporting documents and payment instructions.
- Complete the sections assigned to the institution and the applicant.
- Submit the required material and arrange any necessary appointment through the authorised channel in Türkiye.
- Provide biometrics and monitor requests for additional information.
Higher education forms such as ST1 may require the institution to complete its section before the student finishes the application. Information must be consistent across the form, passport, admission letter and financial records. Check translation and certification requirements for each Turkish document rather than assuming every document needs the same treatment.
Appointments and Biometrics
Confirm the current submission locations and appointment arrangements through Denmark’s official representation pages for Türkiye. Submitting an online application does not automatically remove the requirement to attend for biometrics. Residence permit applicants must normally have their photograph and fingerprints recorded within the deadline specified for their application route. Missing that deadline can affect whether the application is processed.
Bring your passport, application confirmation, payment evidence and requested supporting documents. Check any age-related exemptions separately. An application centre may collect documents and biometric data, but it does not decide whether permission will be granted. Appointment availability may become limited around university intake periods.
Processing Time
Processing depends on the application category, completeness of the file and workload. Check SIRI’s currently published processing target for the relevant study permit when applying. A published target is not a promise that every application will be decided within that period. Appointment waiting time should be considered separately from the decision stage.
Requests for further evidence or confirmation from the institution may extend the process. If a decision could arrive after your course begins, ask the institution about late arrival or deferral. Avoid relying on an undecided application when buying non-refundable travel or accommodation. Allow time for passport handling and any travel formalities after the decision.
Common Reasons for Refusal
Possible grounds include insufficient financial evidence, an ineligible programme, unmet admission conditions or inconsistent information. False or unverifiable documents can also undermine an application. For short educational visits, an inadequately explained travel purpose or insufficient evidence of intended departure may be relevant.
If an application is refused, read the decision for its reasons and any review procedure or deadline. An appeal and a fresh application are different options. Before applying again, assess whether the specific issues identified in the refusal can be addressed with accurate supporting evidence.

Depending on the route, separate mission handling charges, application centre fees, translation, insurance or courier costs may apply. Any special exemption potentially available to Turkish citizens should be confirmed for the individual circumstances and category; it should not be assumed to cover every service charge.
