Who Can Apply for a Germany Family or Friend Visit Visa?
A family or friend visit falls under Germany’s short-stay Schengen category C visa. It is intended for Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye who want to visit relatives, stay with friends or attend a private celebration. Stays throughout the Schengen area must not exceed 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. The permitted duration printed on the visa sticker may be shorter.
This category does not cover family reunification, long-term residence or employment. Ordinary Turkish passport holders generally need a visa. Holders of special, service or diplomatic passports may qualify for short-stay exemptions, depending on applicable conditions. Travellers should check the current rules for their passport before making arrangements; an exemption does not remove the need to explain the visit at the border.
Application Requirements
Germany must be your sole or main destination. For trips covering several Schengen countries, the main destination is determined by the purpose and length of the stays. If no main destination can be identified, the country of first entry may be responsible. Your residential address in Türkiye also determines the appropriate consular jurisdiction and application location.
Your documents should explain whom you will visit, where you will stay, how expenses will be covered and why you will return to Türkiye. Employment, studies, family responsibilities and regular income can help establish your circumstances. A large bank balance alone is not sufficient: the source of funds and consistency of account activity also matter.
Your passport should generally have been issued within the previous ten years, remain valid for at least three months after your planned departure from Schengen and contain sufficient blank pages. Travel medical insurance must cover the entire visit throughout Schengen, with at least EUR 30,000 in cover for required emergency healthcare and medical repatriation.
Invitation and Financial Sponsorship
The invitation should identify your host, provide their address and contact details, explain your relationship and specify the proposed dates and accommodation. Include a copy of the host’s identity document and, where relevant, their valid German residence document. If the host will finance your stay, a Verpflichtungserklärung, an official declaration of commitment issued through the competent German authority, may be required. An informal invitation is not equivalent to this declaration.
Application Steps
- Define the visit: Confirm your host, travel dates, accommodation and funding arrangements.
- Check the checklist: Use the current official requirements for your jurisdiction and employment status.
- Prepare the file: Complete the form and collect invitation, financial, insurance and supporting records.
- Attend your appointment: Submit documents, provide biometrics where required and pay applicable charges.
- Follow the application: Respond to additional requests and check the visa details when your passport is returned.
Dates on the form, invitation, insurance and itinerary should agree. Explain unusual account deposits or relevant changes in circumstances when necessary. Check whether originals, translations or additional copies are required rather than assuming every application location uses identical document arrangements.
Appointments and Biometrics
Book through the application channel designated by the German missions in Türkiye. Appointment availability varies by location and demand, particularly around holidays. Waiting for an appointment is separate from visa processing. The application centre receives the file, while the competent German authority makes the decision.
Fingerprints and a compliant biometric photograph are generally required. Fingerprints recorded for a Schengen application within the previous 59 months may be reused, but a new collection or personal appearance can still be requested. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection. Applications for minors may require parental consent, custody records and documents concerning accompanying adults.
Processing Time
An admissible application is normally processed in approximately 15 calendar days. Individual cases requiring further examination can take approximately 45 calendar days. Appointment waiting times and passport delivery are additional, so the standard processing period should not be treated as a complete travel-planning timeline.
Applications can generally be lodged up to six months before departure and should normally be submitted at least approximately 15 calendar days beforehand. Allow more time where possible, especially during busy periods. Avoid relying on a particular decision date or committing to non-refundable arrangements before receiving the outcome.
Common Reasons for Refusal
Refusal may result from an unclear purpose, unverifiable funding, inconsistent accommodation details, inadequate insurance or reasonable doubts about departure before the authorised stay ends. Previous overstays and unreliable documents can also affect the assessment. If refused, review the written reasons and the current procedures and deadlines stated in the notice before considering a new application or available legal remedies.
