Who Is a Belgian Work Visa For?
For Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye, a Belgian work visa is part of the process of taking up lawful employment in Belgium. The appropriate route depends on the assignment length, occupation, contract and place of work. Most long-term employees require a single permit, which combines employment and residence authorization. This authorization is distinct from the long-stay type D visa used to travel to Belgium.
The standard route generally starts with a genuine job offer from a Belgian employer. Highly qualified professionals, researchers, seasonal workers and employees on an intra-company transfer may qualify under specific arrangements. Self-employment and business ownership normally require a different assessment, potentially including a professional card. Choosing the correct category matters before preparing documents or booking a visa appointment.
Application Requirements
The employment must meet the rules applicable to the relevant category. These may include salary thresholds, qualifications and employer obligations. Employment authorization is assessed under the rules of the competent regional authority, such as Flanders, Wallonia or the Brussels-Capital Region. Requirements should therefore be checked against the actual workplace rather than assumed to be identical across Belgium.
For employment lasting more than 90 days, the single permit procedure generally applies unless an exception is available. Shorter assignments may still need a work authorization or a recognized exemption. A Schengen visa or an invitation from an employer does not, by itself, permit employment. Regulated professions may also require recognition of qualifications or professional registration.
Applicants usually need a valid passport and supporting documents addressing criminal records and medical requirements. Family members do not automatically receive authorization through the employee’s application; accompanying relatives should check the applicable family residence procedure separately. A proposed start date in a contract does not override the requirement to obtain the necessary authorizations before starting work.
Application Steps
- Confirm the employment route: Review the role, assignment length, salary and competent region with the employer.
- Submit the permit application: The employer or its authorized representative files the required documents. The relevant authorities assess the employment and residence components.
- Wait for the necessary decisions: A submission receipt alone does not authorize travel for employment or the start of work.
- Apply for the type D visa: Follow the current instructions of the Belgian authorities responsible for applications in Türkiye, including forms, appointments and payments.
- Complete local registration: After arrival, register with the municipality and complete residence card formalities within the applicable deadline.
Names, job titles, workplace details and salary information should remain consistent throughout the permit and visa files. Changing employers or materially changing an assignment may require further authorization. On receiving the passport, check the visa details and any accompanying instructions before travelling.
Appointments and Biometrics
Confirm the current appointment arrangements with the Belgian diplomatic post responsible for your application and any officially designated application centre in Türkiye. The visa appointment is separate from the employer’s permit submission. Applicants may need to present their passport, supporting originals or copies, photographs and proof of payment. Additional documents or an interview can be requested.
Personal attendance and biometric collection depend on the visa category and applicable exemptions. Fingerprints previously provided for a Schengen visa should not be treated as an automatic exemption for a long-stay application. Documents issued in Turkish may require translation, an apostille or other certification. Check accepted languages and document validity requirements before arranging these services.
Processing Time
Planning should account for both the employer-led authorization procedure and the subsequent visa assessment in Türkiye. Single permit processing can take several months in practice, depending on the region, category, completeness of the file and additional checks. The visa stage requires additional time. Published approximate processing periods should not be treated as a confirmed completion date for an individual application.
Appointment availability, document preparation and requests for further evidence can extend the overall timetable. Agree on a realistic start date with the employer and exercise caution before buying non-refundable tickets or committing to long-term accommodation.
Reasons an Application May Be Refused
- The salary, contract or working conditions do not satisfy the applicable employment category.
- The employer has not fulfilled its obligations or the proposed employment cannot be adequately verified.
- Documents are missing, outdated, inconsistent or cannot be authenticated.
- Required qualifications, employment authorization or residence conditions are not established.
- Relevant public policy, security or health requirements are not met.
After a refusal, identify which authority issued the decision and which part of the procedure was unsuccessful. Available remedies and deadlines are stated in the notification. Filing a new application does not necessarily replace an appeal, and correcting deficiencies does not ensure approval.
