Who Needs a Belgian Transit Visa?

For Turkish citizens travelling from Türkiye, the need for a visa depends on the actual connection through Belgium. An airport transit visa, known as a type A visa, only permits a traveller to remain in an airport's international transit area. It does not authorise entry into Belgium, sightseeing, or passage through Schengen border control. Your complete itinerary matters more than the description of your ticket as a connecting flight.

Turkish citizens are generally not required to hold a Belgian airport transit visa solely because of their nationality. However, this does not mean every connection through Belgium is visa-free. If your journey requires entry into the Schengen Area, the rules applicable to your passport, visas and residence documents must be checked. Confirm the current requirements with the competent Belgian diplomatic mission before travelling.

Airside Transit or Entry into the Schengen Area?

An Istanbul–Brussels–non-Schengen destination itinerary may qualify as airside transit when baggage is checked through and the passenger can remain in the international area. On an Istanbul–Brussels–Paris itinerary, Schengen entry takes place in Brussels because the onward flight is internal to Schengen. A type A visa would not cover that journey. Collecting baggage, changing airports or using a hotel outside the transit area may also require entry clearance.

Application Requirements

First establish whether you need no visa, an airport transit visa, or a short-stay type C Schengen visa. Turkish ordinary, special, service and diplomatic passports may be subject to different entry arrangements. Existing Schengen visas, residence permits and certain other countries' documents can also affect the assessment. Check the validity and conditions of each document rather than assuming it provides an exemption.

Where an application is necessary, you must provide an eligible passport, a credible onward itinerary and evidence that you can enter your final destination. Passport age, remaining validity and blank pages must meet the relevant visa requirements. If the destination requires a visa, include that visa or other evidence of admission rights. Children may need additional parental consent and custody documents.

Application Steps

1. Review the connection: Identify every airport, terminal change, baggage collection requirement and onward flight.
2. Confirm the visa category: Check your passport and existing travel documents against airside transit and Schengen entry rules.
3. Prepare the file: Complete the appropriate form and assemble your passport, photograph, itinerary and destination documents.
4. Attend the appointment: Submit through the currently authorised channel in Türkiye and provide biometrics where required.
5. Check the outcome: On receiving your passport, verify the visa category, validity and permitted entries or transits.

Belgium must also be the appropriate country to handle the application. For journeys involving entry into several Schengen countries, the main destination and purpose matter; the first airport alone does not necessarily determine consular responsibility.

Appointments and Biometrics

Appointment arrangements depend on the visa category and current procedures at the authorised application centre in Türkiye. Bring your original passport, required copies and supporting documents. Fingerprint collection depends on age, previous biometric records and applicable exemptions. Having supplied fingerprints previously does not always remove the need to attend or provide them again.

Children may be exempt from fingerprint collection but still require their own applications and supporting paperwork. Acceptance of a file by an application centre is not a visa decision. The competent Belgian authorities assess the case and may request additional documents or an interview.

Processing Time

Where a visa application is required, allow approximately 15 calendar days for assessment, with extended examination potentially taking around 45 calendar days. Appointment availability, public holidays, document transfers and passport delivery should be factored in separately. These are planning guidelines, not a promised completion date.

Check the current application window before booking an appointment and consider flexible travel arrangements. A short connection or an approaching departure does not automatically qualify a file for faster processing.

Reasons an Application May Be Refused

• An unclear transit purpose or insufficiently documented onward connection.
• Missing evidence of permission to enter the final destination.
• Inconsistent passport details, reservations or application information.
• Insufficient evidence of necessary funds or travel arrangements.
• Concerns about document authenticity or compliance with applicable entry requirements.

If refused, review the official notice for the reasons and any available review procedure. Address the identified issues before submitting another application rather than simply resending the same file.
