Belgium Family or Friend Visit Visa

Who Can Apply for a Belgium Family or Friend Visit Visa?

This short-stay Schengen category is intended for Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye to visit relatives or friends living in Belgium. It can cover family gatherings, private celebrations and time spent with a host. It does not authorise employment, long-term residence or family reunification. Your application should clearly explain whom you are visiting, your relationship and the arrangements for your stay.

Short stays are generally limited to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area. Previous Schengen visits count towards this allowance. Turkish ordinary passport holders normally need a visa; certain other Turkish passport categories may qualify for short-stay exemptions. Check the current rules for your passport before starting an application.

Application Requirements

Belgium must be the competent country for your application. For multi-country trips, the main destination is determined by the purpose and duration of your visits. If no main destination can be identified, the country of first entry generally handles the application. Finding an earlier appointment elsewhere does not justify applying through a different country.

Your passport should generally have been issued within the previous ten years, remain valid for at least three months after your intended Schengen departure and contain at least two blank pages. The form, invitation, accommodation details and financial records should tell a consistent story. Evidence of employment, studies or family responsibilities in Türkiye can help demonstrate your intention to return.

The host’s invitation should identify both parties and explain your relationship, travel dates, accommodation and who will pay the expenses. Include the host’s identity or lawful residence document. If the host provides financial support, the official Belgian undertaking of support, Annex 3bis, may be required depending on the arrangements. An informal invitation is not automatically a substitute for this document.

Provide credible evidence that the trip is affordable. Regular income, account history and the source of funds matter more than an unexplained last-minute deposit. Travel medical insurance must cover the Schengen area throughout your stay, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. Additional requirements can depend on your age, employment status and funding arrangements.

Application Steps

  1. Confirm your dates, host’s address and travel purpose. Check passport validity and your remaining Schengen allowance.
  2. Consult the current official checklist for applications from Türkiye. Obtain the invitation and any required support or relationship documents.
  3. Complete the online application following official instructions, print the required pages and sign where indicated.
  4. Book through the authorised application channel, submit your documents and provide biometrics if required.
  5. Monitor your application and respond to requests. Check the visa details when your passport is returned.

Non-refundable bookings before a decision create financial risk. Any reservations submitted should be genuine, verifiable and consistent with your itinerary. Check whether translations, certification or supporting explanations are needed before attending your appointment.

Appointments and Biometrics

Follow the official instructions for the authorised application centre in Türkiye. Appointment availability varies by location and season. The centre collects applications and biometric data; the competent Belgian authorities decide whether to issue a visa. Keep the appointment confirmation and bring the documents specified in your checklist.

Fingerprints recorded for a previous Schengen application within approximately the last 59 months may be reused, although fresh fingerprints or personal attendance can still be requested. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection. Applications for minors may require parental consent and custody documents, depending on who travels with the child.

Processing Time

A properly lodged short-stay application is normally assessed in around 15 calendar days, but further examination can extend processing to 45 days. Appointment waiting times, document preparation and passport delivery are separate considerations. Applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel. Allow extra planning time during holiday periods rather than relying on a last-minute decision.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Possible reasons include an unclear visit purpose, inconsistent host details, insufficient financial evidence or doubts about departure before the permitted stay ends. Invalid insurance, unreliable documents and previous overstay issues can also affect the assessment. An invitation alone does not establish eligibility. If refused, review the written decision for the reasons, available appeal procedure and applicable deadline before deciding your next step.

Ücret Bilgisi

Application costs may include the consular visa fee and the authorised application centre’s service charge, with insurance, translations and optional services charged separately. Check the current amounts, age-based reductions, exemptions and payment or exchange-rate rules before your appointment. Visiting family or friends does not by itself create a fee exemption, although specific family-member categories may qualify for different treatment. Visa fees and charges for completed application services are generally not refunded following a refusal.

No. An invitation supports the purpose of the visit, but finances, accommodation, insurance and the intention to return to Türkiye are also assessed. Submitting the required documents does not determine the outcome.
