Germany Transit Visa

Who Needs a German Airport Transit Visa?

A German airport transit visa, known as a type A visa, allows passengers to wait in an airport’s international transit area before continuing to a destination outside the Schengen area. It does not authorise entry into Germany, sightseeing or a stay within Schengen territory. For Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye, the requirement depends on their passport, existing visas or residence permits, and complete travel itinerary.

Holders of ordinary Turkish passports generally require an airport transit visa unless an exemption applies. A valid Schengen visa or certain visas and residence documents issued by other countries may provide an exemption. Documents from the United States, Canada or Japan are examples, but the rules differ between visas and residence permits. Eligibility must be checked against current German consular guidance rather than assumed from the issuing country alone.

Application Requirements

The journey must qualify as an airside connection. Applicants should demonstrate that they can legally enter their final destination and provide a credible onward travel plan. Where the destination allows visa-free entry, eligibility should still be checked against the traveller’s passport and purpose of travel.

  • The connection must not require crossing the Schengen external border.
  • Onward flights and any relevant return connections must be documented.
  • The airport must offer an international transit arrangement suitable for the journey.
  • The passport must meet the applicable validity and blank-page requirements.

Collecting checked baggage, changing airports or using a hotel outside the transit zone may require entry into Germany. Flying from Germany to another Schengen country before continuing elsewhere also normally involves entering Schengen territory. A type A visa is insufficient in these circumstances; an appropriate entry visa or an applicable exemption must be considered instead.

How to Apply

Start by reviewing every flight segment, not just the stop in Germany. Separate bookings, terminal changes and overnight connections can affect whether passengers can remain airside. Ask the airline whether baggage will be checked through to the final destination and check the airport’s transit arrangements separately. Airline advice does not replace official visa requirements.

  1. Check whether your passport and existing immigration documents qualify for an airport transit exemption.
  2. Confirm that a type A visa covers the entire connection.
  3. Identify the German mission responsible for your place of residence in Türkiye and its current submission procedure.
  4. Complete the application form and prepare supporting documents.
  5. Attend the appointment and provide biometrics where required.
  6. Check the visa details in your returned passport before travelling.

Names, passport numbers, flight dates and destination details should match throughout the application. If the itinerary changes after submission, check whether the new route still fits the requested visa category. Purchasing non-refundable tickets does not improve the likelihood of approval, so financial commitments should be considered carefully while a decision is pending.

Appointments and Biometrics

Applications follow the appointment and document submission arrangements currently published by German missions in Türkiye. The submission location may depend on residence, application category and individual circumstances. Appointment availability varies during the year, making early preparation advisable even for a short airport connection.

A biometric photograph and, where applicable, fingerprints are required. Previously collected fingerprints may be reused within an approximately 59-month period if the relevant conditions are met, but fresh fingerprints or personal attendance can still be requested. Children under twelve are exempt from fingerprint collection. Applications for minors may also require parental consent and evidence of legal guardianship.

Processing Time

A properly lodged application is normally assessed in approximately 15 calendar days. Additional documents, closer examination or consultation with other authorities can extend processing to approximately 45 calendar days. Appointment waiting times, document preparation and passport delivery should be allowed for separately.

Applications can generally be lodged up to approximately six months before the intended journey. Check current submission rules and seasonal demand, and leave a practical time buffer wherever possible. An approaching departure date does not automatically entitle an applicant to priority handling or an expedited decision.

Reasons an Application May Be Refused

Possible grounds include an unclear transit purpose, failure to demonstrate permission to enter the final destination, inconsistent reservations or documents that cannot be verified. Doubts about the reliability of the information or whether the traveller will remain in the international transit area can also affect the assessment. Choosing an airport transit visa for a route requiring Schengen entry creates a separate eligibility problem.

If a visa is refused, review the decision notice for its reasons and the remedies currently available. A fresh application should address the earlier concerns and document any changed circumstances. Resubmitting the same material does not, by itself, lead to a different outcome.
