Who Needs a French Tourist Visa?

A French tourist visa is a short-stay Schengen visa for Turkish citizens visiting France for holidays, sightseeing or cultural trips. Turkish ordinary passport holders generally need a visa before travelling. Holders of special, service or diplomatic passports may qualify for short-stay exemptions, depending on their passport category and journey. Always check the entry conditions applicable to your circumstances.

The short-stay limit is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area. A visa's validity dates, permitted duration of stay and number of entries are separate restrictions. A tourist visa does not authorise employment or long-term residence. French overseas destinations can have different entry rules and require a separate eligibility check.

Application Requirements

Apply through France if it is your only destination or the main destination of your trip. For a holiday covering several Schengen countries, this normally means the country where you will spend the most time. If stays are equal, the country of first entry generally determines where to apply. Earlier appointment availability elsewhere does not justify choosing the wrong country.

Your passport should have been issued within the previous ten years, remain valid for at least three months after your planned departure from Schengen and contain sufficient blank pages. Accommodation, transport arrangements and funding evidence should support a consistent itinerary. Employment, studies, family responsibilities or economic commitments in Türkiye can help demonstrate your intention to return.

Travel medical insurance must cover the planned stay throughout Schengen, generally with a minimum cover of EUR 30,000. Check that emergency treatment and medical repatriation are included. Financial assessment considers whether your funds are accessible and credible, not just the closing balance of your bank account.

Application Steps

  1. Set your itinerary and establish whether France is the correct country to process your application.
  2. Complete the form on France's official visa application portal and review the personalised document checklist.
  3. Prepare supporting records that reflect your employment status, finances and travel arrangements.
  4. Check the jurisdiction covering your Turkish residential address and book an authorised application centre appointment.
  5. Submit your documents, pay applicable charges and provide biometrics when required.
  6. Track the application and check the visa details when your passport is returned.

Names, passport numbers and travel dates should match across the file. Non-refundable tickets or accommodation purchased before a decision create financial risk. Reservations must be genuine and verifiable, and any significant itinerary changes should be explained where necessary.

Appointments and Biometrics

Appointment availability varies by city and season, so allow extra time around holidays. The authorised application centre collects your file; the relevant French consular authority decides the application. Optional centre services do not influence the outcome or improve your chances of approval.

Fingerprints and a photograph may be collected during the application process. Fingerprints recorded for an earlier Schengen application within approximately the previous 59 months may be reusable, although fresh fingerprints can still be requested. Children under twelve are exempt from fingerprint collection. An exemption does not automatically remove every attendance requirement; check the current procedure for your circumstances.

Processing Time

The usual decision period for an admissible short-stay application is approximately 15 calendar days. Cases requiring further examination may take up to approximately 45 calendar days. Appointment waiting times, file transfer and passport return can add to the overall timeline. A planned departure date does not guarantee a decision before travel.

Applications can generally be lodged up to six months before departure. Although the normal rules envisage lodging at least around 15 calendar days before travel, that margin may be insufficient during busy periods. Respond promptly to requests for additional documents or an interview.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Applications may be refused because the travel purpose is unclear, funds are insufficient or unexplained, reservations are inconsistent, insurance is unsuitable, or the intention to leave Schengen is not sufficiently established. Previous visa breaches and misleading documents can also affect the assessment. A complete checklist alone does not ensure approval.

If refused, read the decision notice carefully. Any review procedure or new application should address the stated concerns. Follow the authority, deadline and procedural instructions provided in the notice rather than assuming that resubmitting an unchanged file will resolve the problem.
