Who Is a French Student Visa For?

This guidance is for Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye to study in France. A student visa may be appropriate for a university degree, postgraduate course, exchange programme or qualifying language course. The correct route depends on the length and nature of the studies and the applicant’s age. Admission to an institution supports the application but does not, on its own, establish eligibility for a visa.

Studies lasting no more than 90 days within a 180-day period generally fall under the short-stay Schengen framework. Longer programmes normally require a long-stay visa. Different long-stay visas carry different conditions: a VLS-TS should not be confused with a temporary long-stay visa. Applicants under 18 and those joining internship-based programmes may need a different category or additional supporting documents.

Application Requirements

You should have an admission or enrolment document identifying the institution, programme and study dates. Your academic background should support the proposed course, with explanations for any significant study gaps or changes of direction. Language evidence depends on the institution and the applicable procedure; there is no single language certificate required for every student visa application.

You must explain how tuition and living expenses will be funded. Savings, a scholarship or support from a family member may be relevant, provided the funds are available and their source can be documented. Check the current official financial threshold before applying. Meeting a monthly benchmark should not replace a realistic budget covering tuition, accommodation and everyday costs.

Accommodation evidence may include a student residence confirmation, rental agreement, suitable reservation or documents from a host. Explain any temporary arrangement and your plans beyond the initial stay. Passport validity and health coverage must also meet the requirements of the selected visa route; short-stay travel insurance rules should not automatically be applied to every long-stay application.

Application Steps

  1. Identify the route: Use France-Visas to check the category and personalised document checklist for your programme.
  2. Complete the education procedure: Follow Campus France Türkiye and Études en France requirements where applicable, including any interview or post-admission stage.
  3. Prepare the application: Complete the online form and assemble consistent academic, financial and accommodation evidence.
  4. Attend an appointment: Book through the authorised application channel in Türkiye and submit your documents and required biometrics.
  5. Check the outcome: Review the visa details when your passport is returned and identify any formalities required after arrival.

The education procedure and the visa application are separate processes. Completing an Études en France file does not replace the consular assessment. Check whether translations, original documents or additional verification are needed before submission. Dates, funding arrangements and institution details should match throughout the application.

Appointments and Biometrics

Appointment availability varies by location and season, particularly before the academic year begins. Plan around both your institution’s deadlines and any education-related procedures. The authorised application centre receives the file and handles administrative steps; the French consular authorities decide whether to issue the visa.

Identity checks, photographs and fingerprint collection may form part of the appointment. Fingerprints previously provided for a Schengen visa do not automatically remove the need to attend a student visa appointment. Long-stay applications can follow different rules. Age-related or physical exemptions may apply, but an exemption from fingerprinting does not necessarily waive attendance.

Processing Time

Allowing approximately several weeks for assessment may be sensible, but this is a planning estimate rather than an official service commitment. Processing can take longer because of demand, additional document requests or further checks. Appointment waiting times and Campus France procedures should be considered separately from consular processing. Confirm current guidance through official channels when preparing your application.

Avoid assuming that a decision will arrive before a particular departure date. Consider the risks of non-refundable bookings and ask the institution about late arrival if needed. Holders of a VLS-TS generally need to validate it online within the first three months after entering France; other visa types may require different action.

Reasons an Application May Be Refused

Possible concerns include insufficient or unexplained funds, unverifiable admission documents, inconsistent statements and an unclear study plan. Inadequate accommodation evidence, invalid documents or previous failures to respect visa conditions can also affect the assessment. For short stays, the intention to leave at the end of the authorised visit is particularly relevant.

If refused, review the stated grounds and follow the appeal instructions and deadlines in the notification. A fresh application should address the underlying concerns rather than repeat the same evidence without clarification.
