Bulgaria Transit Visa

Who Needs a Bulgarian Transit Visa?

For Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye, transit requirements depend on passport type, itinerary, existing travel permissions and whether the journey involves crossing border control. An airside connection and a road journey through Bulgaria are not the same visa scenario. Bulgaria is part of the Schengen area, so travellers must assess their route under Schengen rules.

An airport transit visa, type A, where required, only permits a connection within an airport's international transit zone. It does not authorise entry into Bulgaria. Turkish nationals are generally not required to hold this visa, but any exceptional requirements should be checked for the travel date. Leaving the transit zone may require a short-stay Schengen visa or a valid exemption.

Driving or taking a coach through Bulgaria involves entering the Schengen area. Turkish ordinary passport holders therefore need appropriate entry permission. Special, service and diplomatic passport holders may qualify for short-stay exemptions, subject to the applicable passport and duration conditions.

Application Requirements

Before applying, check whether an existing Schengen visa, residence permit or long-stay visa issued by a Schengen country already covers the journey. Visa validity, unused entries and the remaining permitted stay all matter. Documents issued by countries outside Schengen do not automatically provide equivalent access.

  • A passport should generally have been issued within the previous ten years and remain valid for at least three months after the intended departure from Schengen.
  • Applicants must demonstrate permission to enter the final destination, including a visa or residence document where necessary.
  • Tickets, reservations or a road itinerary should explain the full route, including the return journey.
  • Short-stay Schengen applications require appropriate travel medical insurance and evidence of sufficient funds.

The country responsible for a Schengen application is normally the main destination, not simply the first border crossed. If no main destination can be identified, the first-entry rule applies. Travelling through Bulgaria to spend the main part of a trip in another Schengen country may therefore mean applying to that other country.

Application Steps

  1. Confirm your passport category and whether the connection requires entry through border control.
  2. Review any existing visa or residence document against the complete itinerary.
  3. Identify the competent consular authority and the correct application category.
  4. Complete the form and assemble travel, financial and supporting documents.
  5. Attend the appointment where required, provide biometrics and pay the applicable charges.
  6. Check the issued visa's validity, permitted stay and number of entries before departure.

Dates must be consistent throughout the file. A destination visa that becomes valid only after the proposed arrival can undermine the itinerary. A return route through Bulgaria may also require another Schengen entry, making a single-entry visa unsuitable.

Appointments and Biometrics

Applicants in Türkiye should verify the Bulgarian consular jurisdiction covering their residence and the currently authorised submission channel. Appointment availability varies by location and season. An application centre may handle submissions, but the competent consular authority makes the visa decision.

Schengen applications normally involve a photograph and fingerprints. Fingerprints recorded within approximately the previous 59 months may be reused when the conditions are met, although fresh collection can still be requested. Children under twelve are exempt from fingerprint collection. Parental consent and documents establishing legal representation may also be required for minors.

Processing Time

An admissible short-stay Schengen application is normally decided in approximately 15 calendar days. Further checks or additional documentation can extend processing to around 45 days. Appointment waiting periods and passport delivery may fall outside this timeframe, so allow a practical buffer.

Applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel. Check current arrangements and account for public holidays. An approaching departure date does not create an entitlement to priority handling or approval.

Reasons an Application May Be Refused

Possible grounds include an unclear transit purpose, missing permission for the final destination, insufficient funds or contradictory documents. Inadequate insurance, unverifiable evidence and previous breaches of visa conditions may also affect the assessment. Missing information may lead to a request for further documents rather than an immediate refusal.

A refusal notice explains the grounds and any available appeal procedure. Address the underlying issues before reapplying. A visa does not guarantee admission at the border; carry evidence supporting the itinerary.

Ücret Bilgisi

The visa fee depends on the category required, the applicant's age and any applicable exemptions; check the consular authority's current schedule before applying. Application-centre charges, courier delivery, insurance and optional assistance may be billed separately. Confirm the accepted currency and payment method in advance; visa fees are generally not refunded following a refusal.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

Turkish nationals are generally not required to hold an airport transit visa for an airside connection. Check for exceptional requirements and confirm that the airport and your itinerary genuinely allow you to remain in the international transit zone.
