Bulgaria Work Visa

Son güncelleme:

Who Should Apply for a Bulgarian Work Visa?

For Turkish citizens applying from Türkiye, a Bulgarian work visa usually forms part of a longer employment and residence process. In a standard employment case, the appropriate work and residence procedure must be initiated before the applicant proceeds with a long-stay Type D visa application at the relevant stage. A Type D visa should not be treated as a standalone permit that automatically authorises employment.

The correct route depends on the position, contract length, qualifications and employment arrangement. A single residence and work permit, an EU Blue Card, seasonal employment and an intra-company transfer each have different requirements. Identifying the legal basis for employment is therefore the starting point, rather than simply selecting a visa label.

Application Requirements

A genuine employment arrangement and supporting employer documentation are central to the application. The contract or other required employment document should clearly describe the role, salary, workplace and duration. Employer-side checks and decisions by the Bulgarian authorities take place according to the chosen route; their sequence should be confirmed before a visa appointment is booked.

  • Hold a valid passport and prepare the documents required for a long-stay application.
  • Provide employer paperwork and the relevant approval, decision or notification for the category.
  • Document accommodation, financial support and the required health coverage.
  • Supply criminal record, education and professional qualification documents where requested.

Documents issued in Türkiye may need an apostille or another form of authentication, together with a Bulgarian translation. Requirements are not identical for every document. Check the issuing authority, document type and current consular instructions before arranging certification. Your address in Türkiye may also determine which Bulgarian mission handles the application.

Application Steps

  1. Agree the employment terms and identify the appropriate work and residence route.
  2. Have the employer complete the necessary Bulgarian procedures and obtain the supporting official documents.
  3. Prepare personal documents using the competent mission’s current Type D checklist.
  4. Arrange any required translations and authentication, then book through the appropriate appointment channel.
  5. Attend the appointment, submit the application and respond to additional document requests.
  6. If the visa is issued, complete the applicable residence and employment formalities after arrival.

Employer approval, visa issuance and post-arrival formalities are separate stages. Completing one does not automatically secure the next. Before fixing a start date, confirm when the particular employment route legally allows work to begin and whether further registration or a residence card is required.

Appointments and Biometrics

Applicants in Türkiye should follow the current appointment instructions of the competent Bulgarian embassy or consulate general. A submission channel used for short-stay visas may not accept Type D applications. Check consular jurisdiction, personal attendance rules, payment arrangements and document presentation requirements before making travel plans for the appointment.

Identity checks, an interview and biometric procedures may apply under the relevant rules. Fingerprints previously provided for a Schengen visa do not automatically remove the need to attend a long-stay appointment. Separate biometric enrolment may also be required when applying for the Bulgarian residence card after arrival.

Processing Time

The overall timeline includes more than the consulate’s visa assessment. Employer procedures, official correspondence, document preparation and appointment availability all affect the planned start date. Current processing expectations should be checked for the specific route, and any approximate estimate should identify which stage it covers.

Additional evidence requests, checks between authorities or inconsistent information can extend the process. Where possible, agree a flexible start date with the employer. Buying non-refundable tickets, leaving an existing job or making binding accommodation payments before a decision may create avoidable financial risk.

Reasons an Application May Be Refused

Possible grounds include an insufficiently documented employment purpose, a missing legal basis for the proposed work, incomplete paperwork or discrepancies between the application and employer records. Inadequate accommodation evidence, unsuitable insurance, unverifiable documents and previous breaches of stay conditions may also affect the assessment.

If the application is refused, review the written reasons and any available appeal or reapplication options within the stated deadlines. Resubmitting an unchanged file may not address the underlying issue. Focus on resolving the identified problem rather than adding documents that do not clarify it.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

A short-stay tourist visa does not authorise employment. You must complete the work and residence procedure appropriate to your situation, and should not assume that a tourist stay can be converted into employment status inside Bulgaria.
