Who Can Apply for an Austria Family or Friend Visit Visa?
Turkish citizens travelling to Austria to visit relatives or friends may need a short-stay Schengen category C visa. This route covers temporary private visits, not family reunification, employment or long-term residence. Short stays across the entire Schengen area must not exceed 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. The visa's validity dates, authorised duration of stay and number of entries may impose additional limits.
Ordinary Turkish passport holders generally require a visa. Holders of special, service or diplomatic passports may qualify for short-stay exemptions and should check the rules for their circumstances. Apply to Austria when it is your main destination. If no main destination can be established, the country of first entry is responsible.
Application Requirements
Your application should explain whom you are visiting, your relationship, where you will stay and how the trip will be funded. The host's invitation should include their address and contact details, supported by evidence of their identity and lawful residence in Austria. Where relevant, civil registry records can establish family ties. An invitation does not replace evidence of your own circumstances.
Your passport should generally have been issued within the previous 10 years, remain valid for at least three months after your intended departure from Schengen and contain at least two blank pages. Travel medical insurance must cover all Schengen states with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. This is the insured amount, not the policy price. If your own funds are insufficient, an electronic declaration of commitment, known as EVE, may be relevant.
Application Steps
Start by agreeing travel dates, accommodation and financial arrangements with your host. Check the Austrian authorities' instructions and the authorised application channel serving applicants in Türkiye. The submission location may depend on where you live. Use the current checklist for your personal circumstances rather than assuming another applicant's documents will be sufficient.
- Confirm that Austria is the correct country to process your application.
- Collect your host's invitation and supporting documents.
- Prepare your application form, financial evidence and employment or student records.
- Attend the appointment and complete the required submission formalities.
- Track the application and respond to any additional document requests.
Keep dates and personal details consistent throughout the file. Check whether translations or original documents are required. Avoid non-refundable purchases before a decision unless you accept the financial risk.
Appointments and Biometrics
The appointment normally includes identity checks, document submission and fingerprint collection where required. Fingerprints recorded for a previous Schengen application within the last 59 months may be reused. However, fresh fingerprints can still be requested for technical reasons or by the competent authority. Having previously held a Schengen visa does not automatically remove the need to attend in person.
Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection but still require an individual application. Depending on the child's travel arrangements, parental consent, custody records or other supporting documents may be needed. Appointment availability can fluctuate, particularly around school holidays, so allow time for both booking and preparation.
Processing Time
An admissible Schengen application is generally processed in approximately 15 calendar days. Cases requiring further scrutiny or additional documents can take up to 45 calendar days. Appointment waiting times and passport delivery are separate from the assessment period. Public holidays and seasonal demand can also affect practical planning.
Applications can normally be lodged up to six months before travel and should ordinarily be submitted at least 15 calendar days before departure. These limits do not promise a decision by your preferred date. Check current submission arrangements before making firm commitments.
Common Reasons for Refusal
Possible refusal grounds include an unclear visit purpose, insufficient funds, unexplained financial transactions, inconsistent evidence or inadequate medical insurance. Authorities also assess whether you intend to leave the Schengen area before your permitted stay ends. Previous visa breaches or doubts about document authenticity may affect the outcome. Financial support from a host does not remove these checks.
A refusal notice explains the grounds and available review procedures. Follow its instructions on deadlines and submission methods. Before reapplying, address the identified concerns rather than simply resubmitting the same file.
